For 2024, I’m particularly in the holiday spirit. I’ve always loved Christmas, but this year, the second we began rolling out Christmas content at work, the first notes of Patti LaBelle’s famous “This Christmas” performance ring in over and over in my head. Something about its ‘80’s flair and chaos makes me particularly nostalgic. I also love the original by Donny Hathaway and sang it passionately at my friend Brigit’s fabulous holiday party.

It is also my first year not working in luxury retail during Christmas or sheltering from COVID. I am free to be merry and bright. Hug your Sales Associates this Christmas - performance expectations are high and the economic uncertainty has not been great for traffic. And also, the retail dust and fluorescent lighting is probably speeding up their aging process.

In the dressing room at Seconde Vintage.

This month, I allowed myself to reach into my pockets and spend a little on some warm, winter clothes I can wear to the office without worry. In the winter, I love button-up cardigans, knit skirts, and easy layers that are comfy and simple. I have to fight the urge to not wear black all the time to match my grumpy, sunlight-deprived mood. I rediscovered Uniqlo, finally giving it a real shot and falling in love with their basics. This red cardigan is my new favourite. Uniqlo is a must for winter.

I also picked up the skirt and belt. The knit is Filippa K (another brand I’m obsessed with) and has little pockets (not pictured) that are reminiscent of ‘90s Miu Miu. During my mall trip with Yassine last week, I almost caved and bought a similar belt from Zara, and then like a sign from heaven, I found this nearly identical Italian leather belt for almost the same price. My score of the month - I love a low-slung belt on the hips.

More BTS at Seconde.

Every purchase is justifiable if it’s something I can discern as office appropriate.

I’m also on the hunt for a great fur coat. I’m thinking of treating myself to this one but I was looking for something lighter in colour. I’m also crazy about dyed furs in crazy patterns and unnatural colours. I would love to do a hot pink or something.

I’m always taking pictures of the architecture in the city. I loved this ruched gold curtain behind this glass door embedded in marble. My passion for a city is always measured in how much mystery is perceived in places I’m not allowed to go.

I’ve also added barware and cocktail supplies to my shopping list. As some may know, I’m obsessed with shopping for my home. These little coloured liquor tasting glasses captured my heart. Which one are you?

We had our holiday party at work. It was so great to see everyone dressed up. There is a rumour I had three cups of mac and cheese at the snack bar but I won’t be addressing that at this time.

Molly and I at her birthday party.

I love a birthday girl in a gown. Molly’s party was so great because I got to wear my massive gold coin and chain and a new wool Armani blazer I pilfered from my dad. One thing that is so fabulous about Toronto are the themed dive bars I wish my city had more of. I felt so comfortable and at home here, but also a connection to a different, past self, the version of me that lived in Toronto. I then learned I felt so comforted because some of the decor was purchased from a dear dear friend of mine, which is great because she has the kind of great taste you don’t come by often.

Molly’s hair.

I’m so grateful to be inspired by the way my friends dress. I love their vintage, feminine style that just always includes a little heel and a little purse. It’s so different, so much more opulent and dedicated than other vintage trends going on. It feels so organic and so atmospheric. These are the kind of friends I’ve always dreamt of.

Some little shoes.

There is so much more to be said about this but I just love a little shoe. Over the past 3 years, there’s been such a shift towards a “Carrie Bradshaw” style of dressing that is more detailed than the Yeezy-informed minimalism of the late 2010s. I felt so lost in the 2010s trends, and I think right now, in fashion, there are so many things to be excited about. Trends are fine if they’re fabulous.

Anyways, I love a pointed toe sticking out of a blousy pant.

Carrie and her situationship kissing.

I’m watching Sex and the City for my millionth time through and it still shocks me how with each watch there are still so many new talking points and outfits to be discussed. The relationships and the looks can be hotly debated even over 20 years later. Now, we have more language to describe the intricacies of the relationships on the show. I’m still disappointed they tried to position Big as Carrie’s soulmate after his constant disappointments. How can a woman, and such a woman’s woman in style and look at that, with her free-flowing hair and hopeful spirit be so tied down to a man that dimmed her sparkle every time? And how many women justified a rendez-vous with an unremarkable emotional and spiritual liability because Carrie did it and it sort of worked out? Let me digress.

I would also love to know where they’re finding all these investment bankers.

Halloween 2023

Me and my friends dressed as Marie Antoinette, The Princess of Lamballe and The Duchesse de Polignac.

A snapshot of me and Monica at Elena in Montréal for my birthday party.

Every time I go to Elena for dinner, I always have a fabulous time. While at first glance, it’s easy to underestimate Elena as another trendy restaurant here in Montréal, but something almost esoteric in the details sets it so clearly apart from the rest. I felt so full of love this evening.

My second birthday party in Toronto.

Of course, it’s never birthday week, and late in December, I will be justifying purchases, facial treatments, spa visits, massages and other treats as my own birthday gift to myself. I love this photo of me and beautiful Molly.

A building near my office.

It’s hard to understate my deep gratitude for my new job and the level-up in my career. I feel such an abundance with my new opportunity that allows me to share my true passion and very specific skillset with people that understand me and my constant internal moodboard. The journey to my office is far but I wouldn’t even think about complaining. It’s kind of nice to be in a completely new part of the city, and there’s a little Starbucks in the shape of a chateau or cottage on my way home.

One of my greatest passions are decorative porcelain or glass sculptures.

Glass purses with tiger stripes, butter dishes in the shape of cottages, vintage perfume bottles, glass fruits all capture my heart and my eye at every flea market and art fair. I love how the owner of this shop dignified this chicken with a string of pearls as an act of love. Doesn’t she look marvellous?

The shelf at Seconde Vintage.

This year, I’ve been on a spending diet, rarely buying clothes and certainly not looking for them. I’ve been just doing the best with what I have and I cannot stress enough I’ve been having the best outfits of my life. So, when I do allow myself to be tempted, I indulge my senses at Second Vintage. The one thing I love more than a curated designer vintage boutique done right is its homeware and knick-knacks shelf. If being addicted to tchotchkes is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

The perfectly plated beet salad at Majestique.

Earlier last month, I had the pleasure of hosting a friend from New York. We had a cozy weekend enjoying my favourite restaurants here and going through all my favourite little gems. I love my city, I don’t know why everyone is complaining all the time. (It’s me who is doing the complaining.)

Artisanal cheeses at Atwater Market.

Fungi is beautiful in the same way as cheese mould. The rippling wrinkles on these gorgeous little domes of soft cheese resemble the gyri and sulci (the folds) of the human brain. Mould is intelligent. Mould knows what it wants. Mould knows its endgame.

Pumpkins at Atwater Market.

My heart bursts with love for rambunctious pumpkins. Gourds and squashes with all kinds of colour gradients and bumps bring me delight, like spots on a horse’s flank. So unique and unapologetic.

Horses at the stable in my hometown.

My special birthday treat was to go horseback riding. Being a horse girl is the most luxurious thing I can think of. I love their little ears and moody personalities. My dream is to own 3 horses named Irky, Perky and Miles, and one must have spots on the butt, if not all.

The trail ride was so relaxing and refreshing in the cold autumn forest. Lately, I’ve been focusing on different ways to relax and recharge my batteries over the weekend. I was so happy to celebrate my birthday doing a different activity instead of the usual rager, but I love a party too.

Fake calla lillies I picked up recently.

Something about fake flowers enchants me. I love the plastic petals and obvious artificiality. Something about them is cheap and grotesque, but that “tackiness” seduces me similar to Cavalli or Blumarine’s use of animal print. It’s like an intense, feminine kind of tacky. Indeed, something about the ability or the fact that fake flowers collect dust intrigues me. Real flowers, if they’re not dried, rarely hang around long enough to collect dust. I’m thinking of bejewelling these.

Notes on Metallica's "...And Justice For All" and A Little Bit About Why Mysterious Girls Love Metal

The mysteries of the universe reveal themselves through divine patterns and repetitions. Mandelas, angel numbers and religious apparitions come to us in multiples, demanding our attention. When the Holy Virgin made her likeliness apparent on a mountain in Medugorije, Bosnia and Hercegovina in 1981, she appeared in multiple instances, to multiple youths. In a fashion journalism context, everything is patterns. Trends are apparitions. How many times have I seen those shoes? When did I start to see the shoes? What are the shoes telling me about the cultural zeitgeist and our socioeconomic climate? And now, what does it mean that every cool girl I never knew could recite the government and stage names of the original lineup of Mayhem?

I'm Dora!!!!!!

Hello!!

Welcome to my blog!!!!

My name is Dora and I’m a recent graduate of Central Saint Martins, where I completed my MA in Fashion Communication last December. I’m not sure if my compulsive need to post runway photos to Instagram Stories came before or after CSM but I’m hoping a blog will be a nicer to way to satisfy my urges.

I’m always on the hunt for trends in both fashion and beauty. Like many CSM students, I love fashion photography, making mood boards, researching designers and looking through street style archives for new ways of dressing.

My other interests include music (I interviewed Alex G once I’m not kidding), playing guitar, Julia Fox, being a Deadhead and being kind of shy about it, old magazines and second-hand Harley Davidson shirts. I’m kind of always in a Harmony Korine phase and one day I’d love to work in brand strategy and creative direction.

I’m excited to use this space to write show reviews, trend reports, and dig out really pixellated runway photos from shows you might have forgotten about.

Until next time!

Xoxo,

Dora
